Ivatan literary tradition may be divided in to the poetic forms, the prose forms, and the songs. To the non sung tradition belong the kabbuni, riddle; the pananahan, proverb lore; the kabbata, legends; istorya, tales; the sisvayak, humorous anecdotes; and the viay, religious prose of the Spanish period. To the sung tradition belong the kalusan, working songs; the laji, lyric folk songs; the kanta, songs of the recent provenance; and the religious songs of the Spanish colonial period.
