English Translation
Their Household (Translated by Richard M. Chawag) I If you desire to see my father’s house Be patient, travel by foot for a day and a half, Look at not my father’s dwelling with dismay Three story hut on a four Pillars of Pine wood Outside, you will see a bamboo stairway Be not amazed for it follows you inside Look at no father with the feeling of dismay For around his waist is not a pair of pants, along G-string instead Look at not mother with a feeling of dismay For her gnarled feet wear no pair of shoes When I bought you to our house one day We fed you with some tops of sayote There you saw our plate made of bamboo And out of such, our bowl was crafted That is all I have to say, that is all I know is true That is the life of the poorest man, mocked and despised by other men II When I went to your house one day, Rice is what you served to me, fried duck too, that is what I saw. Everywhere in your father’s house is Yakal made And in the visit, your mother’s head was bowed. When I saw your father, he was warming himself at the hearth I thought it well to join him, but he chuckled and left I turned to see your elder brother and he was chopping woods in your ground I thought to chat with him but he ignores me all the time I cannot compete with your family’s industry I truly cannot compete with your family. That is enough for a poor suitor like me For mockery and humiliation is what I got. Now, I surrender, I give up my life for you So, you can search for an educated man suite to you. |
